How AI Will Impact Jobs in Malta

PR252082a

The Maltese Government, together with the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), has reached a unanimous agreement to launch a national research study on AI in the Maltese labour market. This important initiative aims to understand how Artificial Intelligence will change different work sectors in Malta and how the country can prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

This study follows a request made by Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul during the latest MCESD meeting, where social partners agreed that Malta must be proactive in understanding the impact of AI on jobs, skills, and business operations.

Why Malta Is Investing in Understanding AI’s Impact

During the meeting, Andy Ellul highlighted ongoing Government investments that are helping Maltese and Gozitan workers improve their digital and technical skills. He stressed that dialogue with social partners is crucial to shaping a stronger and more future-ready society.

Ellul explained that this AI study forms part of a broader national effort to assess how technology will affect not only the world of work but everyday life in Malta. He reminded participants that AI is a central pillar in the Government’s long-term vision for economic development.

Key points mentioned include:

  • AI’s role in supporting remote working
  • Its relevance to the Right to Disconnect
  • The need to maintain a healthy work–life balance as technology evolves

Social Partners Agree: AI Brings Big Opportunities—But Also New Risks

During the discussion, all social partners acknowledged that AI will bring several benefits to the Maltese economy, including:

  • Higher productivity
  • Better efficiency
  • Smarter decision-making tools for businesses
  • New types of jobs and industries

However, they also pointed out the challenges AI can create, particularly:

  • Algorithmic risks, such as unfair automated decisions
  • Skills gaps, especially affecting older workers
  • The need for stronger digital education and training

These concerns highlight why this new research study is so important—Malta must ensure that no one is left behind as technology advances.

Education: Preparing the Next Generation for an AI-Powered Future

One of the strongest points raised by social partners was the need for Malta to continue modernising its education system.

They stressed that:

  • Students must be familiar with digital tools
  • Schools must teach critical thinking, not just technical skills
  • Malta must remain competitive and resilient in a rapidly changing technological world

This ensures that young people don’t just use AI—but understand how it works and how to make smart, ethical decisions around it.

Why This Study Matters for Maltese Workers and Businesses

The launch of this research study signals that Malta is taking the future of work seriously. Understanding AI in the Maltese labour market will help:

  • Workers understand which jobs are evolving
  • Older employees receive the right upskilling opportunities
  • Businesses use AI safely and responsibly
  • Policymakers create laws that protect both productivity and workers’ rights

As AI becomes more widespread, Malta’s preparedness will be key to staying competitive and ensuring that technological progress benefits everyone.
